Bord na Gaeilge UCD to run its inaugural summer school this year

This year, for the first time ever, Bord na Gaeilge UCD will be running a summer school, Tionól Gaeilge 2017, in the university. This school, which is being organised by the Bord in conjunction with Gaelchultúr, will take place on the Belfield campus between Monday, 31 July and Friday, 4 August.

Tionól Gaeilge UCD is aimed at adults in Ireland and abroad who are interested in the Irish language and in Irish culture. It will also suit students, both in Ireland and abroad, who are studying Irish as a subject or undertaking an Irish Studies degree.

Language classes will be held each day, Monday to Friday, from 9.30am until 1.00pm. These classes will be offered at five levels to ensure that they will cater for all levels of competency, from those who are fluent in Irish to those who are total beginners. The emphasis in the classes will be on developing the participants’ spoken language skills.

Lectures will take place in the afternoon, Monday to Thursday, in which the focus will be on various aspects of the Irish language and culture – folklore, for example, placenames, literature and the song tradition. School participants can choose to attend an Irish language version or an English language version of each lecture; the speaker will deliver the talk in one language and then, after a short break, he/she will give the same talk in the other language. Cultural events will be held each evening as well.

“Bord na Gaeilge is very excited about Tionól Gaeilge UCD,” says Clár Ní Bhuachalla, the university’s Irish Language Officer. “We believe that the Tionól will prove popular this year and will continue to grow in the years ahead. This summer school will be particularly attractive to those who would like to learn a lot of Irish within a short period of time and to make new Irish-speaking friends. We think it will be of particular interest to those who have done quite a few language courses in the past and who would like to experience a new approach to course delivery.”

Here are the options available as regards accommodation:

Option 1 - All Tionól activities, without accommodation: €250 (€200 student rate)
Option 2 - All Tionól activities, and bed and breakfast accommodation (five nights): €600 (€450 student rate).

Accommodation will be provided on the UCD Belfield campus, from Sunday to Friday.
