The mornings are getting colder and the sun is setting earlier, which means that September has arrived again, and with it the start of another school year. The beginning of a new term is a great opportunity for teachers to reflect on new ways of teaching Irish and to inspire pupils to use the language. With siopa.ie, there’s a good chance you’ll find something to help you do just that.
Siopa.ie was given a complete overhaul in 2013 and since then we have been constantly adding to the list of resources on it. Prior to that siopa.ie was a simple site consisting of around 50 books, relating mostly to Gaelchultúr’s projects and courses. Since then, over 1,000 products have been added to the site and there are now almost 100 teaching resources available on it.
Here are five resources that would be very useful in the Irish classroom:
Réalta an Ranga
A fun and valuable resource suitable for school children and adult learners alike. It gives participants the opportunity to practise asking and answering questions, helps them to understand the difference between the present and present habitual tenses, and equips them with useful words and phrases relevant to the themes.
Learners often commit the prepositional pronouns to memory but have difficulty using them accurately in sentences. Póstaer Pearsan will help both learners and teachers to address this problem in a fun and interactive way.
Dyce is an excellent engaging spelling tool that students love to use. The game requires players to think outside the box to maximise their score. The beauty of Dyce is that it encourages an interest in improving spelling and vocabulary.
At school or at home, these are a fun way to promote learning Irish. All you have to do is ask the questions on the cards to groups or to individuals. These cards were put together with the help of COGG and Foras na Gaeilge and are available for two age groups: 6 years and older (Orange) and ten years and older (Blue).
Póstaeir & Cártaí Taispeána Lingua-App
Lingua App’s resources are perfect as wall posters or as a resource for groupwork. Pupils can be tested on their spelling skills and their understanding of a listening comprehension. Using pictures, pupils can practise speaking the language together and there is a selection of commonly mis-spelled words on them also. The resources can be purchased in one bundle, or you can buy the posters and the showcards by themselves.
Don’t forget that schools and other institutions can place orders by invoice on the site too. All you have to do is fill your basket and choose “Pay by invoice” at the end of the order.
