Newsletter #40: September 2017

An intensive one-day course for those interested in primary school teaching

If you’ve applied for the Professional Masters in Education or if you intend to do so in the future there’s a good chance that preparation for the Irish interview is on your mind. If so, you might like to attend the One-Day Intensive Preparatory Course - Professional Masters In Education (Primary) Irish Interviews that will be held in Gaelchultúr’s headquarters between 10.00am and 4.30pm on Saturday, 23 September 2017.

This course will give you the opportunity to develop your speaking skills and expand your vocabulary as well as the chance to discuss the main topics of conversation for the Irish language interview. The course is suitable for those who have studied Irish at school, perhaps a good number of years ago, who understand a great deal of the language but have had few opportunities to use it in recent years. Although the emphasis is on developing speaking and listening skills, students also have the opportunity to read and write the language. Grammar is taught in context, as it is required.

This course aims to provide participants with information that will enable them to:

• start their interview well – this will put the interviewee at their ease and impress the interviewers

• use verbs correctly

• give comprehensive answers, at a high standard, to questions which are frequently posed in the oral exam

• give grammatically correct answers.

“We run different courses aimed at people who are preparing for the interview, including the Dianchúrsa, and there's always great demand for them,” says Niamh Ní Chadhla, Gaelchultúr’s Planning and Project Manager. “As the course is held on a Saturday, people from all over the country have an opportunity to attend it.

“Those who attend the course are usually at different stages of their interview preparation – there are those who’ve had quite a bit of practice at speaking already, as well as those who're starting from scratch. There are also those who've been preparing answers to the interview questions but who haven’t actually had the opportunity to speak to others.”

As is the case with all of Gaelchultúr’s courses, a communicative approach is used and participants have the chance to speak in pairs and in groups throughout the day.

Participants are given access for three months to an online course, Intensive Preparatory Course – Professional Masters in Education (Primary) Interviews. This course comprises nine different units, each one focusing on a particular topic that could come up in the interview.

The online course contains useful vocabulary and phrases, and many sample conversations are provided as well. All parts of the course include sound files so that students can reacquaint themselves properly with the sounds of the language.

Important information about the language is also given in each unit, and the students’ attention is drawn to the deadly sins: mistakes that are commonly made in the interviews and that should be avoided wherever possible. You can try a sample unit of the online course by clicking here.
