Different ways to prepare for the Irish interview for the Professional Masters in Education (Primary) with Gaelchultúr

The Irish interview is one of the biggest aspects of the entry process of the Professional Masters in Education (Primary) that people tend to worry over. No matter how fluent you were when you sat the Leaving Cert, if you haven’t had the opportunity to practise your language skills since then, there is definitely going to be a bit of rust on your ability to communicate effectively through Irish.

There is no need to worry, however, as we have plenty of ways here in Gaelchultúr to help you shift that rust before you undertake the interview. We have three different courses that are designed specifically to prepare people for the Irish interview that is part of the Professional Masters in Education (Primary), and as a result there is a good chance that we have one that would suit you, no matter what your schedule and no matter where you are based.

The three courses all focus on the main topics of conversation that arise in the interview and participants are given an opportunity to improve their speaking skills and add to their vocabulary.

This course aims to provide participants with information that will enable them to:

• start their interview well – this will put the interviewee at their ease and impress the interviewers
• use verbs correctly
• give comprehensive answers, at a high standard, to questions which are frequently posed in the oral exam
• give grammatically correct answers
• read written passages accurately
• make use of the wide range of online facilities now available through Irish.

All three courses are suitable for those who have studied Irish at school, perhaps a good number of years ago, who understand a great deal of the language, but have had few opportunities to use it in recent years. Although the emphasis is on developing speaking and listening skills, students also have the opportunity to read and write the language. Grammar is taught in context, as it is required.

Have a look at the three courses below, and see if any of them would suit you!

1. Professional Masters in Education (Primary Teaching): Intensive Interview Prep Course

This is the most comprehensive course that we have to prepare people for the Irish interview for the Professional Masters in Education (Primary), and those who undertake it have two options as regards course structure.

Option 1: This option is particularly suitable for those who are based in Dublin. Students undertaking this course attend a two-hour session in the classroom, one night a week for eight weeks, in Gaelchultúr, 11 Clare Street, Dublin 2. This spring those classes will take place on Wednesdays between 7.00pm and 9.00pm, on the following dates: 8, 15, 22, 29 March; 5, 12, 26 April; and 3 May.

You can find more information about this particular option here.

Option 2: This option is more suitable for those who are based outside of Dublin. Students of this course attend two day sessions in the classroom in Gaelchultúr, 11 Clare Street, Dublin 2, as well as three live online classes. The day sessions will take place between 10.00am and 4.00pm, Saturday, 4 March, and Saturday, 29 April 2017. The online sessions will each last two hours, and will take place on Wednesday evenings from 7.00pm – 9.00pm, on the following dates: 15 March, 29 March and 12 April.

You can find more information about this particular option here.

All students of this course, no matter which above option they choose, will have access for three months to an online course: Intensive Preparatory Course - Professional Masters in Education (Primary) Interviews. See below for further information about that course.

2. Intensive Preparatory Course - Professional Masters in Education (Primary) Interviews

This is an online course which can be completed by students at their own pace at home, no matter where they are based – in Ireland or further afield.

There are nine different units in the course, each of which concentrates on a distinct topic that could come up in the interview. Here are the topics dealt with in the course:

• Unit 1: The Structure of the Interview
• Unit 2: Background and Where You Live / The Family
• Unit 3: The Working Life
• Unit 4: Holidays and Travel / Languages
• Unit 5: Education and the Teaching Profession
• Unit 6: My Lifestyle
• Unit 7: Speaking about the Past
• Unit 8: Speaking about the Future
• Unit 9: If I were the Minister for Education ...

The emphasis of the course is on preparing students to be able to tackle the above topics during the interview. Useful vocabulary and phrases are taught, and there are many sample conversations provided also. All parts of the course include sound files so that students can reacquaint themselves properly with the sounds of the language.

Important information about the language is also given in each unit, and the students’ attention is drawn to the deadly sins, linguistically speaking, that are commonly made in the interviews and that should be avoided wherever possible.

You can purchase this course, or have a go at a sample unit of it here. Since this course is wholly online, you can purchase it at any time, and you will have access to it for six months.

3. One-Day Intensive Preparatory Course - Professional Masters In Education (Primary) Irish Interviews

As the title implies, this course is a one-day intensive course, that would therefore suit someone who wasn’t looking for a course as comprehensive as the Professional Masters in Education (Primary Teaching): Intensive Interview Prep Course, but also would prefer to spend some time in the classroom with a teacher rather than working completely independently from home.
