Song of the month: I Have Two Yellow Goats

“Song of the month” aims to encourage the readers of this newsletter to learn songs in Irish and sing them themselves. The lyrics of each song are provided, along with a translation into English and a link to a video of the song on YouTube.

This month’s song is “Tá Dhá Ghabhairín Bhuí Agam” (“I Have Two Little Yellow Goats”), a merry nonsense song from Munster. This version of the song is from Nell Ní Chróinín, a young singer from the west Cork Gaeltacht of Múscraí. Nell won the prestigious Corn Uí Riada sean-nós singing competition at the Oireachtas in 2014 when she was only twenty-four years old.

Tá dhá ghabhairín bhuí agam, I have two little yellow goats,
Is minseach bhainne, minseach bhainne. And a nanny-goat for milk, a nanny-goat for milk.
Briseann siad an croí ionam, They break the heart within me,
Á dtabhairt abhaile, á dtabhairt abhaile. Driving them home, driving them home.
Níl áit agam go gcrúfainn iad,I have no place to milk them,
Ach síos tríom hata, síos tríom hata. But down through my hat, down through my hat.
Scaoileann mo hata tríd é, My hat lets it through,
Ar fuaid an bhaile, ar fuaid an bhaile. Around the town, around the town.

Tá dhá ghabhar sa choill agam,I have two goats in the woods,
Is caoirigh geala, caoirigh geala. And white sheep, white sheep.
Ní íosfaidís aon ní dhom, They would eat nothing for me,
Ach barr an aitinn, barr an aitinn. Except the top of the furze, the top of the furze.
Cuirim in aghaidh an chlaí iad,I herd them up against the wall,
Le stumpa de bhata, stumpa de bhata. With a stump of a stick, a stump of a stick.
Siúd thar mhullach an chlaí iad, Over the top of the wall they go,
I bhfad ó bhaile, i bhfad ó bhaile.Far from home, far from home.

Port nach bhfuil ag an bpíobaire,A tune that the piper doesn’t know,
Ná Hieland Laddie, Hieland Laddie. Is Hieland Laddie, Hieland Laddie.
Port nach bhfuil ag an bpíobaire, A tune that the piper doesn’t know,
Ná Hieland Laddie, Hieland Laddie. Is Hieland Laddie, Hieland Laddie.
Seán Ó Ceallaigh an píobaire,Seán Ó Ceallaigh is the piper,
Is bíodh sé mar sin, bíodh sé mar sin.And let it be like that, be like that.
Seán Ó Ceallaigh an píobaire,Seán Ó Ceallaigh is the piper,
Is bíodh sé mar sin, bíodh sé mar sin. And let it be like that, be like that.
