Introduction
Since Irish became an official and working language of the European Union and since the enactment of the Official Languages Act 2003, new employment opportunities have emerged for Irish speakers who have a high level of competence in the language. Many people who speak fluent Irish have never had an opportunity to learn the grammar of the language properly or to add to their writing skills. To cater for such people, Gaelchultúr will be running the Intensive Preparatory Course in Written Irish (‘Dianchúrsa ullmhúcháin i gCruinneas na Gaeilge’) again between September and December 2017.

Who should attend the course?
This part-time programme is aimed at those who wish to apply for a post-graduate course in Irish - an MA in translation, for example - but who feel that they don’t have the required standard in the language. It will also suit those working through the medium of Irish on a daily basis - journalists, civil servants and translators, for example - who wish to improve their written skills and grammar.

What is covered in the course?
The course will focus on grammatical accuracy, writing style and translation skills. There will also be an emphasis on the technological resources available in Irish, including those that are online.

Schedule
Most of the course will be conducted online but classroom sessions will be organised on four Saturdays as well.

The Saturday sessions will take place at the following times: 10.00am-1.00pm agus 2.00-4.00pm. It is not compulsory to attend the classroom sessions, however participation is highly recommended. Participants will be given access to Gaelchultúr’s e-learning site, ranganna.com, where they will have an opportunity to undertake interactive lessons and receive instant feedback. A forum will also be provided on ranganna.com to enable participants to discuss course content with their tutor and with other students. A two-hour grammar and translation exam will be held at the end of the course but this test is optional. This final exam can also be used as an entrance exam for Gaelchultúr’s Postgraduate Diploma in Translation, which will be available again from September 2017.

Entry requirements
This course is suitable for those who achieve a score of at least 80% in Gaelchultúr’s Online Irish Test. To take this test now, please click here.
